Incense Making

Anyone in love with the gentle wafting scents of incense might be baffled to find that learning how to make this at home isn't all that difficult. Incense making does require some decision making in advance and the right incense making supplies, but beyond that it's a hobby almost anyone can get into.

How to make incense will depend a lot on the type of incense a person wants to create. It's possible to make your own incense and even make an incense burner with a few basic steps. Making incense isn't as tedious as some other scent creating hobbies, and there are even incense making kits that can help.

Whether you want to learn how to make a incense bottle, how to make a smoking incense bottle or figure out how to go about making incense sticks, it's a good idea to seek out basic instructions first. The directions for learning how to make an incense burner, for example, will be different than the steps involved in charcoal incense making. Careful attention to the instructions is almost always in order.

Those who want to learn how to make incense will first need to decide what kind they would like to make. The two basic types are combustible and non-combustible. Combustible incense is created by forming the mix into sticks or cones. These sticks or cones are then directly ignited to release the scents. Non-combustible incense contains the scents, but it is another item that is burned to diffuse them.

Incense itself is generally made from resins, woods and herbs. These are formed into a special mixture, typically using a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle, to either create sticks and cones or non-combustible pellets. Ingredients that can go into the mix include such things as cedar, pine and spruce for the woods; amber, balsam or copal for the resins; and chamomile, cardamom or henna for the herbs. The choices are pretty amazing.

The exact amount of incense making material to use will depend on individual recipes. The reality is, however, that creating homemade incense isn't as difficult as it sounds. Beginners might want to start out with kits and good instructions, but there is plenty of room for fun and experimentation along the way as long as sound safety measures are used.

Incense making can be a very rewarding hobby. Up there with candle and soap making, it's one of the most interesting scent-related hobbies to try out.
